How to choose a kitchen sink for an Indian kitchen

Indian kitchens wash large utensils every day, from kadais to pressure cookers, so a sink has to be practical before it is pretty. These are the choices that matter most.

Stainless steel sinks

  • Durable, hygienic and the most common choice.
  • Look for 304-grade stainless steel, which resists rust and staining better.
  • Thicker steel feels sturdier and is quieter when utensils are dropped.
  • Matte or textured finishes hide scratches and water marks better than mirror finishes.

Quartz and granite composite sinks

  • Scratch- and heat-resistant, and available in colours like black and grey.
  • Give a premium, seamless look on stone counters.
  • Heavier than steel, so the counter and cabinet must be strong enough to support them.

Single bowl, double bowl or drainboard?

  • Large single bowl: the easiest for washing big utensils.
  • Double bowl: wash in one and rinse or soak in the other.
  • Drainboard: a handy space to let utensils drip dry if counter space allows.

Getting the size right

  • Measure the internal width of the cabinet below the sink.
  • A deeper bowl reduces splashing and fits large utensils more easily.
  • Check whether you want the sink mounted on top of the counter or under it (undermount gives a cleaner look on stone counters).

Choosing the faucet

  • A tall, high-arc spout makes it easier to fill and wash large utensils.
  • Pull-out and pull-down faucets help rinse the whole bowl.
  • If your water leaves white marks, finishes that are easy to wipe help keep the faucet looking new.

Common questions

Which kitchen sink material is best for Indian cooking?

Stainless steel is the most practical all-rounder for heavy daily use. Quartz or granite composite sinks are a good choice if you want a coloured, premium look and higher scratch resistance.

Is a double bowl sink better than a single bowl?

A double bowl helps with washing and rinsing separately, but a large single bowl is easier for big utensils like kadais and pressure cookers.

What should I measure before buying a kitchen sink?

The internal width of the cabinet below, the counter depth, and whether the sink will sit on top of or under the counter.
